This weekend was a big one. My mom came in town, it was our turn to teach Sunday school, and everyone but Joel got sick. BIG WEEKEND. When I'm sick, our house turns into an actual pig pen. Kids start leaving dirty clothes all over the family room, dishes pour out of the sink like a garbage dump, and everyone eats near the closest television. I swear they must just turn the plate upside down when they're done eating. The crumbs are EVERYWHERE.
So right in the middle of all this, I got this awesome idea to visit our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore to look for a used refrigerator. And if you're anything like me, you know before you leave on such a trip that you're coming back with something not even remotely related to the item you went for. This is my trick to get my husband to go: I say, "We really need an extra refrigerator! Think of all the extra beer and casseroles I could put in there. We would save so much money, because I could make dinner in the morning and just keep it in there until dinner time. Nothing fancy; an old frige like that would probably only cost 35 bucks at the most." And we come home with a desk, an old teacup and saucer, and a broken typewriter.
I met resistance on the purchases the whole way. First, he said, there's no way the desk will fit in the van. Then, he texted me that there was a small animal living in it. Once we got it in the van and home, the resistance continued. He just knew it would sit outside and get rained on, waiting for me to repaint it, until it was too ruined and had to be thrown away. Excuse you, Joel. Just because that's happened the last three times we got something at Habitat, that's no reason to go throwing stones. It was then that I purposed to do it all by myself, by golly, and prove that rascal wrong. I stomped my foot, put my hands on my hips, coughed and sneezed, and vowed to get that sucker looking like new.
But I'm no dummy, y'all. In my heart, I knew that we are better together on projects like this; so I appealed to his loving side. I said, "I really miss when we used to do this type of thing together. I know you want to play golf, but I want you to crack open a beer and sit outside with me while I work on the desk. I WANT YOU TO WANT THIS!!!" And even though he didn't want this, he agreed. I love that about him.
This whole story is just an illustration of why we get almost nothing done around here. The desk is sitting out in front of our house under a tarp, just waiting for the impending thunderstorms that are on their way. There is a power sprayer under the tarp with it, along with two very expensive cans of paint. The 5 dollar desk and $200 worth of supplies will just sit there and wait, and they will huddle together under the tarp while it rains all week. I will trudge through the house and take Dayquil, and the project will fall further and further down our to-do list.
UNLESS, I hold myself accountable on this blog. I really, really want to get this A frame into shape! And I'm starting with the desk for the girls' room. I WILL get it done this week. And I will try my hardest to make Joel proud by finishing the projects I start around here, and I will get this A frame working for us from corner to sharp corner. Stay tuned to see pictures of my projects, and please please please give me suggestions and your ideas on how to make this house rock!
